Cruise Does Tribeca

Well, so much for Tribeca being a showcase for independent film! Tom Cruise is stepping off his spaceship long enough to pelt festival goers with his new film, "Mission: Impossible III." Cruise plans to crisscross Manhattan by motorcycle, speedboat, taxi, helicopter, sports car and subway before landing at showings of the movie in Tribeca, Harlem and, ultimately, the Ziegfeld Theatre for the film festival premiere. Obviously, Cruise is trying to keep a low profile! "Tom has always enjoyed finding new ways to connect with the fans and we're both excited to be sharing the movie with them on this incredible stage," Paula Wagner, Cruise's producing partner, said. Apparently, Ms. Wagner is also Tom's PR agent!

Spielberg Gets Real

Is Steven Spielberg the next Simon Cowell? Maybe, since Spielberg will be a judge on the new reality series from Mark Burnett ("The Apprentice," "Survivor") called "On the Lot." 16 contestants will split into two teams. Each team will produce a short film each week. Then, in a second show that same week, the films and the contestants will be judged on their efforts. The show will start shooting this fall and premiere in 2007 on Fox. All of the other Burnett shows have catchy names for the place where contestants are let go. So, since Spielberg is in this, I think they should call that place "The Temple of Doom." Whaddya think?

Have Erotic Thrillers Gone Limp?

(Wink, wink!) "Basic Instinct 2" bombed in a MAJOR way this weekend, only making it to Number 10 in its first week. Wow! That's gotta hurt! But, there are numerous filmmakers who see the erotic thriller as a thing of the past. Their opinion as to why: today's conservative climate.
