'Potter' Going Boffo at Box Office!

Warner Bros. Pictures' "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" worked its magic at the boxoffice Wednesday.

The fifth feature in the franchise, which bowed in 4,181 theaters, took in an estimated $44.23 million at the North American boxoffice for the day, including $12 million from midnight screenings. That earned the movie the title of biggest Wednesday opening ever, trumping the previous record-holder, Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man 2," which bowed to a single-day gross of $40.4 million in 2004.

The "Phoenix" opening also bested the $40.1 million first-day gross of 2005's "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," the previous best first-day gross for any of the Potter movies, though in that case opening day was a Friday. "Phoenix" also notched the biggest IMAX opening ever, pulling in $1.9 million on 90 screens in North America.

'Sex in the City' Going to the Screen

The four women who spiced up Manhattan's singles scene for six years on the HBO television series "Sex and the City" appear headed for a big-screen reunion after all.

New Line Cinema, a corporate sibling of HBO under Time Warner Inc., is close to sealing a final deal to finance and distribute the long-stalled picture, a spokesman for the studio said on Thursday.

The project is set to begin shooting in the fall with all four stars of the HBO hit -- Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon -- on board to reprise their roles.

'Transformers' Rated Fresh.....Barely!

The Michael Bay destructo-machine 'Transformers' has been rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. But, just barely! At 60% positive reviews, it has only squeaked by. But, even Roger Ebert's given it 3 Stars, so, it looks like Michael Bay has caught himself a break. Like the guy actually reads these reviews!

'Ratatouille' 1, 'Die Hard' 2

A rodent gourmand and a seasoned cop spiced up the summer stew and, though neither delivered a box office feast for the ages, they propelled the first up weekend compared to last year since May.

The weekend's main course, Ratatouille, served up an estimated $47.2 million on approximately 5,800 screens at 3,940 theaters. In terms of attendance, the opening was on par with the first two Pixar features, Toy Story and A Bug's Life, but significantly lower than the rest, including the last one, Cars, which started with $60.1 million on 7,000 screens at 3,985 sites.
